Understand
Read an activity as a cycle of flows: what comes in, what is done with it, what goes out.
Systemic steering for the rest of us
Modus Vivendi builds tools for understanding and measuring that assess an activity's continuity risks. We create tools for those who want concrete trajectories in a rapidly changing world.
Manifesto
We are those who refuse to resign ourselves to decline or to violent predation.
The rules of the game have changed.
It is no longer possible to rely on single performance indicators blind to reality. We build the measurement tools of a robust world, based on liveable compromises rather than retreating into untenable slogans.
Every compass we design is built with the same obsession: giving readability and agency to the people who use them.
Positioning
All our compasses are based on the theory of Archimedes' mill: to correctly analyze a machine, you must control what goes in, what is done with it, and what comes out. This method lets us build tools capable of a snapshot over a period or real-time monitoring, as long as the data exists to do so.
Read an activity as a cycle of flows: what comes in, what is done with it, what goes out.
27 indicators aggregated without weighting, for a comparable reading from one activity to another.
The reading key is continuity risk and the means to reduce that risk to improve your robustness.
Our compasses will never tell you whether you are “good” (we're convinced you are!), but what risks weigh on your continuity and the means to reduce them.
The family
Each compass measures a different flow. Progress runs from reflection to launch.
Physical robustness
Measures the physical continuity risk of an activity: materials, energy, supply.
Digital robustness
Measures the digital risks and dependencies of an activity: data, software, systems, compliance.
Territorial robustness
Measures the robustness of a territory and the means to improve it.
Societal robustness
Measures the robustness of a human group (a company, the occupants of a territory, etc.) and the means to improve it.
